Fort Barrancas
Built by the Spanish around 1797 on the site of a
former British redoubt, Fort Barrancas (Fort San
Carlos de Barrancas) guarded the entrance to
Pensacola Bay. When General Andrew Jackson
captured Pensacola in November 1814, British
soldiers blew up the fort as they evacuated the
area.

Fort Barrancas, reconstructed by American
engineers in 1844, is now an historic site
administered by the National Park Service as part of
the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The fort is
located on Highway 295 (Navy Boulevard), which
runs through the Pensacola Naval Air Station.
