Fort Hawkins
The United States government ordered the construction of Fort Hawkins in 1806 after the Treaty of
Washington established the Ocmulgee River as the boundary with the Creek Nation. During the war,
the fort served as a gathering spot for troops sent to fight both the Redstick Creeks and the British
along the Gulf Coast.
Today a reproduction of one of the fort’s two blockhouses stands on the site of the original structure.
It is located in Macon, Georgia on Fort Hill Street adjacent to the Ocmulgee National Monument. The
site, maintained by the city, is open to the public. Appointments are necessary, however.
