Kimbell-James Massacre
On September 1, 1813 one dozen members of the Kimbell and James families were murdered by a group
of Red Stick warriors in a surprise attack near the Kimbell house. Incredibly, two of the survivors of the
attack included a woman who had been scalped and her infant son. The victims were buried by the
garrison of nearby Fort Sinquefield, which was attacked the next day.
The site of the massacre lies on Highway 84 in central Clarke County, Alabama near the community of
Whatley, about one mile from Fort Sinqufield Road.
